In Sweden there are five national minority languages: Finnish, Yiddish, Meänkieli, Romani and Sami. These languages have been spoken in the country for a very long time and carry rich traditions and history. Unfortunately, the number of speakers of several of the languages is decreasing rapidly, which makes the work to preserve them even more important. Through our translation services, we contribute to the languages being used in official contexts, which strengthens their role in society and facilitates their transmission to future generations.
The national minorities – Jews, Roma, Sami, Swedish Finns and Tornedals – have since 2000 special rights to use their languages and practice their culture in Sweden. Protecting and promoting these rights is central to ensuring the human rights of minorities and preserving their unique cultural heritage. For example, this could mean mother tongue teaching, translations of official documents or cultural events.
